An extensive interior refurbishment and kitchen extension in Peckham, south London. Externally a sensitive palette of reclaimed bricks knits the side extension and brick patio into the existing Victorian house. Internally, intelligent use of the sloping site enables surprisingly dramatic spaces with mischievous details. The basement has been partially excavated to allow a single floor level between kitchen and dining spaces, while the ceiling above changes drastically in height.

The expansive victorian lounge and drawing room are reduced in size and dressed in a dark palette of blues and blacks. The effect is one of contrast and comfortable seclusion, with the overheight sliding doors allowing the room to be sealed from the rest of the house.

Studio MASH designed and installed a bespoke steel and rope balustrade that marks the boundary between the darker, cosier private spaces and the light-flooded kitchen/dining room for gathering and entertaining.
